REVEALED: Manchester United hand new boy Amad Diallo the No 19 shirt – following in the footsteps of Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt… and Eric Djemba-Djemba!
- Amad Diallo signed for United in October but completed his move on Thursday
- United have confirmed the teenager will wear the No 19 for the rest of the year
- He follows a number of illustrious names including three treble winners
Manchester United have confirmed that new signing Amad Diallo will wear the club’s number 19 shirt for the rest of the season.
Diallo technically joined the club in the previous transfer window, staying at Atalanta on loan for the first half of the season.
The £37million deal, which will cost United £19million and up to £18m in add-ons, went through after Diallo passed a medical and agreed personal terms on Thursday.
The Red Devils announced the signing on Thursday welcoming the teenager to the club
Diallo will wear the number 19 shirt was made most famous by former striker Dwight Yorke
A club statement confirmed the teenager will wear the number 19, with his first name ‘Amad’ displayed on the back of the shirt.
Diallo follows a number of illustrious names to wear the shirt, as well as some who didn’t enjoy the best of times at Old Trafford.
Class of ’92 midfielder Nicky Butt was the first to don the shirt, making 78 appearances in it before switching to the more familiar number eight in 1996.
He wasn’t the only 1999 treble winner to wear the shirt, as he was followed by Norwegian defender Ronny Johnsen and Dwight Yorke.
The Trinidad and Tobago striker was arguably the most notable to ever wear the shirt, scoring 65 goals in four seasons.
However he was followed by two players who never found their feet at Old Trafford in goalkeeper Ricardo and midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba.
Nicky Butt, another 1999 treble winner, was the first to ever use the number 19 for United
Some players including Eric Djemba-Djemba struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford
Ricardo only made one Premier League appearance in three years while Djemba-Djemba who was famously brought in as a future replacement to Roy Keane, never hit the heights of what was hoped for him.
Edwin van der Sar also had the number 19 shirt for one season before switching to the more traditional number one, while Barcelona stalwart Gerard Pique also represented the number in his brief time at Old Trafford.
Danny Welbeck wore the shirt for six seasons while Marcus Rashford scored 24 goals in 105 appearances before he switched to number ten.
Diallo made just five appearances for Atalanta but United feel he has a lot of future promise
James Wilson wore the shirt between Welbeck and Rashford, but now spends his time at Salford City.
Having made only five appearances for Atalanta, it is unlikely Diallo will be pushed straight into action with United who are in the title hunt this season.
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking to nurture his talent over the coming seasons, and clearly feel the 18-year-old has promise which is represented by his £37m price tag.
