Marcos Rojo found out six-year Man Utd career was over ‘on social media’

Marcos Rojo first discovered his six-and-a-half-year spell at Manchester United was over on social media, according to reports.

The Argentine left United to join Boca Juniors on transfer deadline day for an undisclosed fee, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford.

His last Red Devils appearance came all the way back in November 2019, with the £80million signing of Harry Maguire a few months earlier pushing him further down the pecking order.

As a result, Rojo spent the second half of last season on loan at Estudiantes, but in the latest January window he has departed for good to join Boca.

Yet according to ESPN, the centre-back was still waiting to hear whether he would receive a new one-year contract at United when Solskjaer announced he was being let go.

With just six months remaining on his deal, Rojo was reportedly left in the dark over a potential extension before discovering his fate on social media.

Solskjaer said at a press conference on January 8: “Both of them [Rojo and Sergio Romero] have contracts until the summer and they're not going to be extended.”

Romero, who is also set to become a free agent at the end of the season, looked likely to follow Rojo out of the Old Trafford exit last month.

  • But after reportedly saying farewell to his United team-mates, the backup goalkeeper failed to land a move away from Manchester before the deadline passed on Monday.

He has since rejoined first-team training, with Solskjaer revealing this week: “He’s in the group and of course he lost a lot of training earlier on in the season.

“He joined us late after time back home and over Christmas as well, he was with family in Argentina.

“He’s working with the keepers but with Dean (Henderson), Lee (Grant) and David (de Gea) it’s been more difficult to get in the match squad.”

Rojo, meanwhile, has got off to the worst start imaginable at Boca, suffering an injury in his first training session with the club.
