Marcus Rashford pulls out of England squad as Smith Rowe handed first call-up

Marcus Rashford has pulled out of the England squad to work on his fitness but Emile Smith Rowe will earn a place following his tremendous form for Arsenal so far this season.

Manchester United’s attacker will not be taking part in the Three Lions’ games with Albania and San Marino as he intends to work on his fitness, according to journalist Simon Stone.

Rashford endured a long time out on the sidelines after undergoing surgery at the start of the campaign. He also fell ill after Man United’s 2-2 draw against Atlanta in the Champions League, missing two days of training.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put the 24-year-old on as a substitute in the Manchester derby defeat to City but he’s now decided not to appear for England’s World Cup qualifiers this weekend.

However, Arsenal youngster Smith Rowe could earn his first England cap for the senior team following his fine start to the season for the Gunners. The 21-year-old has scored four goals and provided two assists in 11 Premier League games so far.

An FA statement read: “Emile Smith Rowe has received his first call-up to the England senior men’s squad.

“The Arsenal forward arrived at St. George’s Park on Monday having initially been scheduled to join the MU21s in Burnley.

“However, Marcus Rashford, James Ward-Prowse, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw have not reported for international duty.
