Marcus Thuram left football fans outraged across Europe amid the Covid-19 pandemic after he was caught spitting at an opponent.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s disgraceful star striker was spotted by the VAR cameras during Saturday’s Bundesliga clash with Hoffenheim.
Stefan Posch was less than a yard away from Thuram before he was spat at and immediately winced, wiping the saliva off his face.
The ugly incident comes as many people’s Christmas are being cancelled across Europe due to the fight against coronavirus.
And this latest disgusting act by a top footballer left supporters fuming while everyone aims to curve the spread of the virus.
Thuram’s team-mate Valentino Lazaro was shocked by the forward’s behaviour.
After the game he said: “It's a shame for the team and a shame for him. It doesn't fit with his character at all.”
Midfielder Christoph Kramer added: “His fuse blew. That should of course never happen to him. You can't excuse it.”
Manager Marco Rose apologised and said: “It simply doesn't belong on a football pitch. It goes way beyond the limits.”
Monchengladbach went on to lose the match against Hoffenheim 2-1, having been level at 1-1 in the 77th minute when the spitting occurred.
Fans have been calling for a lengthy ban, and some have even suggested Thuram should be arrested for the disgraceful act.
One reacted on Twitter, posting: “Should be band for the rest of the season and arrested”.
Another added: “Doing that during a pandemic should be absolute minimum 10 game ban probably longer”.
And a third said: “Pretty sure people in the uk have been jailed for this sort of behaviour”.
