Anthony Martial has endured a difficult season at Manchester United, having featured only 14 times in all competitions since August. The Frenchman is currently out of action with a groin injury and there is no guarantee Erik ten Hag will find a place for him back in his starting XI now that he is returning to full fitness.

Martial’s campaign got off on the front foot, with the forward netting three in his opening three appearances for the Reds Devils.

But the 27-year-old hasn’t had a consistent run in the first team at any point this season, and while his United teammates are progressing under the guidance of Ten Hag, Martial is apparently falling further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Martial made the news back in November but for all the wrong reasons when he was involved in a training ground spat with Man United youngster Dan Gore.

According to The Mirror, Ten Hag took a final training session before the break for the World Cup with the players who hadn’t been called up to represent their nations.

But he was forced to pause the session when Gore – who was invited to take part to bolster numbers – clattered Martial with a strong tackle, sparking a confrontation between the duo.

Martial is alleged to have lashed out at the 18-year-old, who stood his ground. The teammates were eventually separated, with Ten Hag reminding Gore about going in hard on first-team players.

The situation ended with Martial apologising to the youngster and Gore being happy to make peace.

Four months on and Martial has featured only seven times for Man United, with Antony and Marcus Rashford becoming Ten Hag’s preferred wide attacking players.

Meanwhile, the likes of Jadon Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho have also seemingly moved ahead of Martial.

Since the very start of February, Martial has been out of action with a groin injury and hasn’t featured for the club, but he is now on the mend and back training with the first team.

While Martial was away, Ten Hag made some changes at United and ahead of the Red Devils’ 0-0 draw with Southampton, invited four youth team players to train with the first-team squad.

The quartet consists of Sam Murray, Omari Forson, Marc Jurado and a player Martial probably isn’t too keen to take on in training having just returned from injury, Gore.

Ten Hag’s squad has been hit hard with injuries and a suspension in recent weeks with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Donny van de Beek and Marcel Sabitzer all out of action.

The youngsters have been given the opportunity to impress in training and are expected to provide Martial and co. even more competition for a place in the first team in the coming weeks.
