Memphis Depay stripped of Barca squad number to make way for Robert Lewandowski

Memphis Depay has stood aside for his No.9 shirt to hand it to Barcelona's new boy Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker left Bayern Munich, after eight years in Bavaria, to join the Catalan side earlier this month. And Lewandowski was thrown in at the deep end, starting his life at Barcelona in the Las Vegas' ill-tempered El Clasico.

In that clash, Lewandowski donned the No12 jersey, but according to Spanish outlet Sport that won't be his number for much longer. Barcelona are hoping to give Lewandowski the famous No.9 shirt, but it involves the Blaugrana having to sell Depay.

Lewandowski will join a famous list of names to don the No9 at the Camp Nou.

Johan Cruyff, Ronaldo, and Hristo Stoichkov have all at some point worn the No9 shirt in Catalonia. While in recent years world-class footballers such as Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Samuel Eto'o have been handed the accolade.

However, Barca's last two No9s, Depay and Martin Braithwaite, have felt the weight of the shirt on their shoulders.
