Mesut Ozil LEFT OUT of Arsenal’s 20-man squad to face Manchester City as Mikel Arteta’s snub adds to midfielder’s Gunners woes… just hours after he tweeted his excitement about returning to the pitch

  • Mikel Arteta has left Mesut Ozil out of Arsenal’s trip to Manchester City
  • The German is reportedly fit to play but did not make the 20-man squad
  • It is the latest blow is a Gunners career that appears to be grinding to a halt
  • Ozil has already been dumped by Adidas, ending his £2.5m-a-year sponsorship
  • The star had tweeted ‘back tomorrow’ in excitement of the big restart

Mikel Arteta has left Mesut Ozil out of his 20-man Arsenal squad to face Manchester City in the Premier League restart.

The Gunners travel to the Etihad Stadium in need of a result to kickstart their European qualification but will have to do so without their highest paid player.

Arteta’s shock snubs appears to have taken even Ozil by surprise, with Arsenal’s No.10 tweeting ‘back tomorrow’ in anticipation of the restart.

The German has had a season to forget the Emirates and it looks unlikely to turn around

Ozil had tweeted his excitement just over 24-hours before the game, before being left out

Ozil’s stature and popularity have been in rapid decline, with the man once dubbed the ‘assist king’ seeing his performances follow a similar trend.

The World Cup winner has managed fewer top-flight assists in the last three seasons (13) than he did in a single campaign in 2015-16 (19), only starting 18 of Arsenal’s 29 league games this term.

The Arsenal midfield lining up to face City had space for Matteo Guendouzi, Granit Xhaka and Joe Willock, with Ozil left out despite starting every Premier League fixture since Arteta’s appointment.

The 31-year-old’s much derided £350,000-per-week deal expires in 2021, meaning that Arteta will struggle to shift the German this summer regardless of whether he plans to reintroduce the star.

Ozil has featured in Arsenal’s warm-up matches and is not suffering from any injuries

Arteta has pledged to rule Arsenal with an iron fist and he has made another ruthless call

Ozil’s season to forget has extended to matters off the pitch, having been the target of an attempted car-jacking alongside team-mate Sead Kolasinac in July last year.

During lockdown the former Real Madrid star lost his £2.5m-per-year sponsorship deal with Adidas, with the brand reacting to his dwindling influence.

The German will feature heavily in Arteta’s post-match press conference, as he did on so many occasions for Freddie Ljungberg, Unai Emery and Arsene Wenger.
