Mikel Arteta says Manchester City have proved their doubters wrong this season and are now the best team in Europe.
But Arteta says his old club DO have weaknesses Arsenal can exploit ahead of this weekend’s clash with the runaway Premier League leaders.
City made a slow start to the season but are currently on a mammoth 17-game winning streak and have opened up a ten-point gap at the top.
Arteta said: “I think they are the best team in Europe at the moment.
“The way they are performing, the football they are playing and the consistency of the results take all that it an it makes them the best team.
“So we have a big but as well a very exciting challenge ahead of us on Sunday.
“What they have done is react to a difficult moment and a big team has to do that so when everyone doubting their ability to compete again and be the team that they are, they reacted in a a really convincing way, all united and doing what they do best – being very consistent and winning games very comfortably.
“Weakness-wise, they have weaknesses like every team but at the moment teams have struggled a lot to find any of that because I think first of all defensively they have been really, really strong.”
City have only conceded 15 goals in the Premier League this season with Ruben Dias and John Stones forming a formidable partnership at the back.
Arsenal go into Sunday’s game after a 1-1 draw with Benfica in the Europa League which Arteta called a “missed opportunity” due to their dominance.
The Gunners also have games coming up against teams just above them in the table like Tottenham and Leicester.
Arteta said: “It could define our season if we are unable to close the gaps to them but it can create momentum for us if we can get closer to them.
“We know the margin for error is minimal with the season that we have had in previous months so we need to kick on.”
