Arsenal have been urged to ditch any plans to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount. Former Gunners defender Bacary Sagna does not believe the England midfielder would start for the Premier League leaders.

Mount has been linked with a surprise exit from Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window. The 24-year-old is yet to agree a new contract with the club.

His current deal has less than 18 months remaining and the Blues have been tipped to sell the academy graduate this year rather than risk losing him for free in 2024. Liverpool have been strongly linked with a transfer.

Arsenal have also reportedly keen on a move for the playmaker. However, Sagna has told his former club that Mount would not start ahead of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli.

“I don’t see him playing ahead of any of the players in Arsenal’s starting eleven. I think he would purely be an addition and I don’t see him getting ahead of Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard or Gabriel Martinelli,” Sagna told Games Cabin.

“I believe that Martinelli has more speed and more creativity and I don’t believe buying a player like Mason and putting him on the bench would be a good decision for the club.

“They need to be smart and they need to bring in players that are content with sitting on the bench sometimes and being happy to share the time amongst the other players in their position. That’s what Manchester City do, but I’ve been at Manchester City and it wasn’t always easy wanting to play and being stuck on the bench.

“Does Mason have the mental qualities to come to Arsenal and sit on the bench? I’m not sure because I’m sure he’d want to play every week.”

Mount has failed to feature as frequently under Graham Potter as he did under Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard. He has started just two of Chelsea’s last seven games.

Potter suggested that Chelsea could allow Mount to leave if an agreement over his contract is not reached with the club’s hierarchy. “Ultimately it is between the club and Mason,” he said. “I have spoken to him numerous times about his situation, football and life generally.

“My feelings for Mason are clear. He is a fantastic person firstly but sometimes these things happen. They are just complicated and it is best that I speak little about it, let them get on with it in deciding what is right for both parties.”
