Jose Mourinho could not hide his frustrations after Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool and revealed he told Jurgen Klopp ‘the best team lost’ Wednesday’s thriller at Anfield.
Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino leapt above Toby Alderweireld and found the net with a brilliant last-gasp header to send the reigning Premier League champions to the top of the table.
Son Heung-min had earlier equalised for Spurs to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s deflected strike past Alisson in a dramatic first half.
Referee Anthony Taylor brandished just two yellow cards across the 90 minutes on Merseyside but there was tension between the two managers shortly after the final whistle.
Fourth official Mike Dean tried his best to stand between Mourinho and Klopp and it was clear something had been said which upset the Liverpool manager.
Mourinho was asked about the conversation once the dust had settled and lifted the lid on their chat before criticising the German’s behaviour on the touchline throughout the match.
‘I told him the best team lost and he disagreed but that’s his opinion,’ the Tottenham head coach told Amazon Prime Video.
‘By the way, if I behave the same way on the touchline, like he does, I have no chance to stay there and I’m out for a minute.’
Mourinho went on to take a thinly-veiled swipe at Pep Guardiola as he continued to vent his anger in an explosive post-match interview.
‘That’s animated?’ the Portuguese continued.
‘Do you want me to take the table with the time from the fourth official’s hands [referring to Pep Guardiola’s behaviour in Manchester City’s draw with West Brom] to see what happens to me?
‘I’m saying that for some reason I am different. That’s the only thing I say.’
More to follow.
