Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has revealed that he talked with fellow French international and Manchester United star Paul Pogba about his difficulties with manager Jose Mourinho.

Ndombele has had a strained and often publicly challenging relationship with Mourinho, but the 24-year-old is currently experiencing his best period since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2019.

Mourinho brought Pogba back to Manchester United in 2016, and in similar fashion to Ndombele, had a turbulent relationship before the Portuguese was sacked two seasons later.

‘We spoke, we spoke about that but really quickly,’ Ndombele told Football.london.

‘It wasn’t like he gave me any advice because our situations were completely different.

‘It’s true he worked with Mourinho but my own experiences weren’t the same and each relationship has its own characteristics.’

The transformation in Ndombele’s status at White Hart Lane has been dramatic. The playmaker managed just 12 starts in the Premier League last season and 27 appearances in total.

A particularly low moment came in Spurs’ 1-1 draw against Burnley in March 2020, when Mourinho asserted that his team played ‘without a midfield’, publicly slamming Ndombele’s performance.

‘Burnley wasn’t the hardest moment for me,’ he said.

‘I think the hardest moment was the restart (after lockdown) but sure it wasn’t a nice time for me, the match against Burnley.

‘The coach came out and said what he had to say afterwards and it’s not nice to hear those things.’

But this campaign his fortunes have turned around. Ndombele has started all but three of Spurs’ 23 league games so far, one of which he missed through injury.

The Frenchman also admitted that he has no issues with Mourinho’s brusque style of man-management.

‘If you know Jose Mourinho then you understand how he behaves,’ he said.

‘I wouldn’t call it confrontation, but he’s just got a certain way of sending his messages and it actually all depends on how you receive those messages he sends.’
