Neville sounds like he’s ‘battered helium’ as Chelsea v Liverpool turns to chaos

Chelsea and Liverpool produced one of the most exhilarating halves of Premier League football during their chaotic clash on Sunday and the excitement appeared all too much for Gary Neville.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds a commanding lead after 26 minutes before a quick-fire Chelsea comeback saw the game descend into chaos as the two title chasers went in level at the break.

Mateo Kovacic crashed in a stunning volley from the edge of the area to give the Blues hope before Christian Pulisic sparked scenes of euphoria at Stamford Bridge with a rifled equaliser in first half added time.

While Premier League fans were royally entertained by the thriller of a half packed with drama, wonder goals and contentious flashpoints, they appeared equally amused by the excitable reactions from commentator Neville.

The ecstasy of emotion was clearly too much for the Sky Sports pundit who produced a number of iconic squeaks and squeals throughout the enthralling half full of twist and turns.

In response to one particularly high-pitched sound effect, one fan tweeted: "Neville battering the helium before his shift."

Another added: "Gary Neville making weird noises. You know it's a mad game when that happens!"

Fans appeared unanimous in using Neville's sound effects as a barometer for the standard of Premier League football, with another agreeing: "You know something extraordinary is happening when Gary Neville is making sex noises again during commentary."

The former Manchester United full-back shared a classic "Ooohh" with listeners following Salah's fine finish for Liverpool's second and sounded as if he nearly imploded as Mason Mount dragged an effort wide moments before the half-time whistle was blown.

"That’s a classic Neville squeal if there ever there was one," a fan commented following Neville's reaction to Salah's strike.

"Gary Neville’s squeals are a thing of beauty," added another, with one fan even questioning: "Shouldn't Gary Neville's balls have dropped by now?"
