Newcastle are already plotting their second January signing as Kieran Trippier edges closer to joining Eddie Howe’s side – with the Magpies targeting a deal for Everton outcast Lucas Digne.
Trippier is reportedly on the cusp of becoming Newcastle’s first signing since the club’s £305million takeover was rubber-stamped by the Premier League back in October.
The Magpies have thrashed out a £12m deal with Atletico Madrid for the England right-back, with potential add-ons taking the deal to £15m. Trippier’s eagerness to work with Howe, who he briefly played under at Burnley, has played a role in his decision to bring his Spanish adventure to a premature end just 18 months after making the switch to La Liga.
The 31-year-old is set to pen a bumper £100,000-a-week deal to become the club’s highest earner.

His arrival will be a welcome boost for Howe as he bids to drag Newcastle away from the relegation zone – and the new Toon chief is keen to build on Trippier’s signing by wrapping up a quick deal for Digne, according to The Telegraph.
The report goes on to outline that the Newcastle hierarchy have been actively preparing for the winter transfer window for months – and are now beginning to work through a shortlist of names.
And after wrapping up a cut-price deal for Trippier, Newcastle are now set to move for Digne.
The left-back has fallen out of favour with ex-Magpies boss Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park this term.

The Frenchman has also been linked with a move to Chelsea as the Blues look to draft in a replacement for Ben Chilwell, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury last month.
But Newcastle are looking to nip in and seal a deal for the 28-year-old before the European champions make their move.
Digne had established himself as a firm fan favorite at Everton prior to this year, racking up over 120 appearances for the Toffees since his 2018 switch from Barcelona.
Digne’s sudden availability has seemingly nudged Digne ahead of the likes of Norwich ace Max Aarons and Southampton full-back Romain Perraud, who were also on Newcastle’s shortlist ahead of the window.
The club’s new owners have made funds available with Newcastle currently marooned in the Premier League relegation zone.
As well as deals for Trippier and a new left-back, the Magpies are also aiming to snap up two central defenders and a powerful central midfielder this month.
A striker is also on the agenda for Howe. Newcastle have already been linked with speculative moves for Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang and Anthony Martial after Callum Wilson was ruled out for a month with a calf injury.
