An ambitious bid by Newcastle to land Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain looks doomed to failure, according to reports in Italy.

Serie A sources claim that the Geordies are one of a host of clubs interested in the Argentine, who is set to quit Juventus following Andrea Pirlo's appointment as head coach.

But they say the 32-year-old, whose distinguished career included spells at Real Madrid and Napoli, is unlikely to end up at St James' Park because a move to the North East “does not warm the heart.”

Toon chief Steve Bruce is awaiting news on the extent of the knee injury which forced Dwight Gayle off just 18 minutes into his first run-out of the season in a behind-closed-doors win over Crewe on Tuesday.

Gayle started the second half and laid on the second of Newcastle's three goals but was forced off and underwent scans amid fears he could face a lengthy lay-off.

Joelinton has yet to figure for the Magpies while the club will listen to offers for Yoshinari Muto who has struggled to adapt to English football and does not figure in Bruce's long-term plans.

Federico Fernandez joked on social media that he'd have a word with his mate Lionel Messi to try and persuade him to swap Barcelona for Tyneside.
