Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been left with three primary centre-back options after being hit with a double blow on Monday. Reports indicate that their chances of signing either Sven Botman or Samuel Umtiti are slim to none, with signing a defender top of the Magpies’ priority list this month.

Howe and co. appeared to be most fixated with Lille defender Botman who, at 21-years-old, is deemed to be one of the most promising defensive prospects in Europe.

But after several approaches, The Athletic claim that the French outfit will stand firm on their intention to keep hold of him until at least the summer.

Barcelona’s Umtiti was also effectively taken off the market on Monday when he signed a contract extension at the Camp Nou.

Many had tipped the French World Cup winner to switch to Tyneside amid strained relationships in Catalonia, but that now appears to be off the cards.

With all this in mind, Express Sport looks at three centre-backs who Newcastle could swoop for between now and the end of the month:

Diego Carlos

At 28-years-old, Carlos is several years older than Botman, but that means he would come with far more experience.

As such, Newcastle would still have to fork out a hefty sum to tempt Sevilla into doing business, and an initial £25million bid has reportedly been rejected.

Botman and Umtiti aside, Carlos’ name has made the most noise when it comes to Newcastle’s defensive targets, although Julen Lopetegui’s tricky position could make progress difficult.

Both of Sevilla’s starting centre-backs have recently been linked to moves away, with Jules Kounde the other, meaning some serious money may have to be slapped on the table to make it worth the Spanish side’s gamble.

Benoit Badiashile

The 20-year-old is incredibly into his fourth season of senior football at Monaco, and has racked up appearances at various youth levels with France.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle considered Badisahile as a back-up option if the deal for primary target Botman fell through – a position they appear to find themselves in.

However, the Toon are wary that Monaco are likely to demand some serious cash for a centre-back deemed starting quality in Ligue 1 at such a young age.

With Howe keeping one eye on the young Frenchman, it is clear that Newcastle are not only looking for players who can provide an instant impact, but those who can set them up for the future too.

Issa Diop

From one 6ft 4in Frenchman to another, Diop made a lot of noise in his early days at West Ham, with links to Manchester United popping up among others.

But his career hit a roadblock at the start of last season, and he has only appeared twice in the Premier League this time around.

According to L’Equipe, the Magpies have been toying with the idea of submitting a £10m bid to test the Hammers’ resolve.

That price represents a fraction of those quoted amid links to the Red Devils several years ago, and Diop would come in as a player who has a proven ability to impress at Premier League level.
