Newcastle lodge improved Sven Botman bid with Lille defender ‘keen on transfer’

Newcastle United have reportedly launched an improved bid to secure defender Sven Botman from Ligue 1 side Lille.

The Magpies confirmed their first major signing since their £300million takeover in October on Friday by securing Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier for £12million.

Newcastle were linked with 21-year-old centre-back Botman by The Athletic back in December but were unable to tempt the French club into accepting their offer.

But the outlet now report that Newcastle are prioritising the signing of the Dutchman this transfer window and have submitted an “improved” offer in the hopes of bringing him to St. James’ Park.

Botman himself is understood to be “keen” on the move though Lille’s decision remains unknown.

The Ligue 1 side are eager to keep their talented young defender but may be forced into making a sale for the right price due to their financial situation.

Botman moved to Lille from Ajax back in 2020 and has already made 64 appearances across all competitions, demonstrating his already-impressive level.

He has been a crucial part of Lille's defence as they sit eighth in Ligue 1 and is expected to play a huge role in their last-16 clash against Chelsea in the Champions League, should he stay beyond January.

Meanwhile, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has identified central defence as the weakest point in his side.

The Magpies currently have the joint-worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 42 goals this season.

Howe will be hoping that La Liga winner Trippier and Botman together can bring solidity to the backline as Newcastle set their sights on catching the likes of Watford and Burnley ahead of them in the table.
