Newcastle’s Champions League display left Arturo Vidal ‘sick’ in scathing rant

Howe feels Newcastle’s point at AC Milan will ‘look better and better’

Newcastle’s Champions League performance against AC Milan left Arturo Vidal feeling ‘sick’, the former midfielder has brutally claimed. Vidal said Eddie Howe’s side were ‘disgusting’ at the San Siro and only qualified for the European competition because they ‘know how to run’.

The Magpies held on to a goalless draw in their first Champions League clash for 20 years. Goalkeeper Nick Pope was forced to make several excellent saves to prevent the Italians winning at the San Siro.

But the valiant display was not enough to impress former Barcelona and Juventus star Vidal, who brutally savaged the Premier League outfit. The Chilean claims he ‘does not understand’ their approach and says they ‘don’t do anything’ in games.

“Those fools from Milan with Newcastle left me sick. I don’t understand Newcastle, they are fourth in the league (last season), but they don’t do anything, disgusting,” Vidal ranted on his Twitch channel.

“They are lucky because they only know how to run, otherwise they wouldn’t be there.”

The 36-year-old Vidal, who recently joined Brazilian club Athletico Paranaense, also tore into other Champions League games. He was “bored, as always” by Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Red Star Belgrade, and claimed he “fell asleep” as Paris Saint-Germain swept aside Borussia Dortmund.

Saudi-backed Newcastle managed just one shot on target against the Italian giants, with Milan largely dominant in the game. But Howe batted away criticism and called the goalless draw a ‘great result’.

The Newcastle boss reflected: “It’s a great result. I felt that after the game and still feel that now. It’s not underestimated by us internally how good the result was.

“It’s a tough place to go, they were Champions League semi-finalists last year in a hostile atmosphere. We showed great mentality, a resolute display and great to get a clean sheet.”

Newcastle have endured an inconsistent start to the season – beaten by Man City, Liverpool and Brighton. Some fans have harboured concerns that they are becoming predictable to play against.

However, Howe insists that is not an issue as his side prepares to face Sheffield United on Sunday. He said: “You definitely have to constantly evolve, but the speed at which you evolve, you have to be careful that you don’t lose your core strengths. We will and always have continually tweaked things that we think will make us better.

“I don’t think we’re at a stage where we’re predictable. I don’t think we’re at a stage where we have become easy to play against – not in my opinion – but you always have to constantly have an eye on that, for sure.”
