Neymar asks PSG to sign Lionel Messi after phone call with Barcelona star

Neymar has reportedly asked Paris Saint-Germain to sign Lionel Messi after a phone call with his friend and former Barcelona teammate.

Messi has sensationally told the Catalans that he wants to leave after more than 20 years of involvement with the club.

The 33-year-old handed in a transfer request earlier this week and is now being linked with the likes of Manchester City, Inter Milan, and PSG.

Pep Guardiola ’s City are the bookies favourites to land the six-time Ballon d’Or winner, but whoever makes moves to sign him is going to have to fork out big money one way or another.

Even if Messi is available of a free transfer, something that is being speculated on, his new club will still have to pay his massive wage packet.

While it is not clear how much he would demand, he currently earns around £100million a year at Barcelona and something similar would seem likely.

Neymar joined PSG in 2017 for a world record £198m move from Messi’s Barca, and the two remain good friends.

The Brazilian is believed to have had a telephone conversation with the wantaway forward earlier this week and since asked PSG to make moves to sign him.

Messi and Neymar played together at the Nou Camp for five season between 2013-2017 and struck up a brilliant partnership alongside Luiz Suarez in a potent forward line.

And the pair would likely relish the chance to help PSG win their first ever Champions League crown.

According to Sky Sports the French side are yet to make a formal offer for Messi, despite Leonardo calling the player's representatives to ask about the specifics of his contractual situation at Barcelona.

Messi’ preferred choice of destination is believed to be City as he would reunite with former boss Guardiola.

The pair won 14 trophies together over a four year period of great success, including two Champions League titles.

Should they reunite it would give fans the chance to see with their own eyes whether the little maestro could cut it in the Premier League, a question that has been asked for years.

Either way, should Messi leave Barcelona, it would be one of the biggest transfers in football history.
