Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considers new role for £50m Man Utd star

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopes the signing of Kieran Trippier will provide him with greater tactical flexibility ahead of the new season.

Manchester United have already failed with two bids for the Atletico Madrid defender, but Trippier is understood to be desperate to make a return to England following two reputation-enhancing seasons in Spain.

The Spanish champions value the 30-year-old at around £30million, but United are said to be increasingly confident of completing a deal for the former Tottenham star and hope to conclude a swift agreement with Real Madrid for France international Raphael Varane.

The addition of both players would offer Solskjaer the opportunity to use a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system on a more regular basis and that, according to The Sun, could have repercussions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

A £50m signing from Crystal Palace two years ago, Wan-Bissaka has cemented his reputation as one the Premier League’s best one-on-one defenders. However, although he has made improvements to the attacking side of his game, he is still some way short of being capable of offering the sort of contributions Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James do for Liverpool and Chelsea, respectively.

With that in mind, Solskjaer is giving consideration to to deploying Wan-Bissaka in a more central role, alongside skipper Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, or Varane should he join from Real Madrid.

Speaking about Wan-Bissaka’s attacking numbers last season, Solskjaer said: ‘I think he’s done remarkably well. His improvement has been there for everyone to see.

‘It’s still very early in his full-back career. I still think that we will see a lot of improvement from Aaron. We do see it in training and on the pitch as well, that’s for everyone to see.’
