Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood needs one attribute to become No. 9

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told Mason Greenwood he needs to improve his heading if he is to become a No. 9 at Manchester United.

Greenwood often plays on the right and cuts in, something which proved effective as he scored his first goal of the season in the Carabao Cup victory at Luton.

Marcus Rashford was also on the scoresheet with the two youngsters having come off the bench at Kenilworth Road.

Greenwood has been tipped to have a bright future at Old Trafford having regularly impressed despite being just 18 years of age.

And Solskjaer is backing him to end up as the main focal point of United’s attack, as long as he improves his heading ability.

Solskjaer said: “The goal was important for him and Marcus, always as strikers. To get that confidence and feeling of scoring.

“Mason can play through the middle and also wide. Sometimes, it is nice to be out wide facing forward rather than being the number nine and battering ram. I think he will end up as a number nine.

“But for him to be a number nine, he needs to learn how to head a ball. I keep telling him that.

“If he wants to do that he is welcome to come and practise with me.”

Manchester United icon Darren Fletcher also believes Greenwood will lead the line in the future.

He said: “I think he’s a starter in United’s best team. “Mason plays off the right-hand side, Anthony Martial in the middle and Marcus Rashford on the left, with Bruno [Fernandes] at No. 10.

“That’s the best attack and the one that put people on the edge of their seats after lockdown and produced United’s best form.
