Michael Owen insists Arsenal are better than Leicester’s title-winning side and believes they can contend for the top spot this season. The Gunners are four points clear at the top of the Premier League following Sunday’s 1-0 win over Leeds at Elland Road.

Arsenal have not won the Premier League since they went the entire season unbeaten in 2004. But hopes have risen that the wait could finally come to an end this term.

Leicester upset all the odds by winning the title under Claudio Ranieri in 2016. Manchester City have won the title in four of the six seasons since then.

Owen claims Arsenal have more quality than that historic Foxes team. And he reckons a couple more wins in the coming weeks would really push their case as City’s biggest challengers.

The former England striker told Premier League Productions: “Possibly after today people will be thinking ‘hang on, four points is a nice little cushion’. I cast my mind back to Leicester and it certainly wouldn’t be a surprise like the Leicester season but I do cast my mind back to when Leicester went four points clear and ‘it’s only Leicester, they won’t win it’, or whatever.

“Arsenal have got a lot more ability than that team and I do think if they continue like this for the next three, four, five games, if they continue winning, then all of a sudden people will be thinking ‘wow, they are the real deal, they are the biggest thorn in the side of Manchester City maybe’.

“And after today’s game, Manchester City obviously not picking up three points, all of a sudden it strengthens their grip at the top there. It’s going to be a strange season with the World Cup impeding, encroaching on it, let’s say, but stranger things have happened and they’re looking good all of a sudden.”

Meanwhile, Gary Neville still believes Arsenal will fall away and City will run away with the title. But former City star Micah Richards insisted the Gunners are a different proposition this season.

Richards said on Sky Sports: “Arsenal have been brilliant, you always expect them to drop off but this season, they’re different. The energy, [but] over the course of the season if they get injuries.

“The difference between City and Arsenal is if City get a few injuries, they play the same way. If they lose [Gabriel] Jesus, [Oleksandr] Zinchenko – to a degree – Thomas Partey, all of a sudden they become a different team. As they are now they’re on a good run.”
