Pablo Mari’s dad says son is doing ‘fine’ in positive update after stabbing

Arsenal defender Pablo Mari has told his dad that he is doing "fine" after being stabbed in an Italian supermarket, according to reports in Spain.

Mari, 29, is on loan at Italian side Monza and was one of six people to be stabbed in a shocking attack near Milan on Thursday evening. All of the victims were taken to hospital, and one man has sadly passed away.

Mari was stabbed in the back. Thankfully, his injuries are not life-threatening. The defender's father confirmed to Spanish radio station Cadena Cope that had he spoken to his son, who told them he was "fine" and that he "loved them very much."

His dad said: "These have been very worrying hours for us. They started calling me at 8pm and my heart has skipped a beat." However, he confirmed that being able to speak to his son had eased his fears.

He continued: "Veronica (the footballer's partner) has not told us how it happened, but she has told us that she has seen a person die in front of her. She has reassured us confirming that they are fine and that everything has been a fright for them."

Mari is understood to have spent the night in hospital under observation from medics. He is set to undergo surgery today (Friday 28th) after suffering deep cuts to his back.

Monza released a statement after the horrific attack. The club's CEO Adriano Galliani said: "Pablo Mari has quite a deep cut to his back, but fortunately it did not reach any vital organs like the lungs or anything else.

"His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly. He has some lesions, but not very serious. He is conscious and getting stitches."

Arsenal also released a statement, which read: "We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt. Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident."

Local media reported that a 30-year-old supermarket cashier died during the incident at a supermarket in Assago, Italy. A 46-year-old suspect has been detained following the events.
