Patrice Evra has taken a fresh swipe at Manchester United's transfer policy, labelling their failed pursuit of Jadon Sancho as “embarrassing”.
Evra has become one of the biggest critics of his former club in recent weeks, as their transfer window continues to frustrate fans.
Up to this point, United have landed just one of their targets in the shape of Donny van de Beek from Ajax.
Edinson Cavani is expected to make that two over the weekend, but the move for the Uruguayan has only come after a frustrating saga with Sancho.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pinpointed the England forward as his number one target, but United bosses have been unwilling to meet Borussia Dortmund’s £108million valuation.
The United manager has suggested that he is happy with his squad as the deadline looms, but Evra isn’t so sure.
Asked if his old club could compete for titles, he told Sky Sports: “No, I’ll be honest. Even the captain [Harry] Maguire, how many years has he been in Manchester? Just one and he is the captain, it shows you that this club has no leader to win trophies.

“We are talking a lot about transfers when we talk about United now, it’s about transfers, not about the football.
“But of course, like I say, if we send lawyers to buy players. We won’t get any players. We don’t send football people, it’s a disappointment.”
When the idea of the coronavirus pandemic being a contributing factor to their quiet window was posed, Evra added: “Please, we can’t use the coronavirus as an excuse, please. We have one signing.
“They don’t have to buy five, seven, 10 players to build a team. But at least, your main target, the main target was the Sancho saga and that was embarrassing. We didn’t even get him.”
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness also questioned the direction of the Old Trafford decision makers, suggesting van de Beek wasn’t the type of player they needed.
“Where are you going to play him?” Souness said about the ex-Ajax man. “When you look at the makeup of that midfield it’s really interesting going forward. They’ve got three numbers 10s really, Donny van de Beek, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.
“It was like, ‘Oh he’s available, let’s get him, instead of trying to strengthen your weakest areas.
“A centre-back is paramount. There is no forward thinking, ‘this is where we are, this where we will be in six months’.
“I heard Gary [Neville] talking to us six months ago, saying: ‘We’re not going down that route anymore of signing old players’. What do they go and do? Go and bring the guy from China [Odion Ighalo] and now they’re talking about signing [Edinson] Cavani.
“There is no direction.”
