Paul Merson’s "not good enough" rant about Harry Maguire from 2019 resurfaces

Paul Merson's comments about Harry Maguire from earlier in the season have resurfaced following the Manchester United star's poor run of form.

Maguire had just completed an £80million move to Man United from Leicester City in 2019 when Merson labelled the transfer fee "ridiculous".

But Maguire started well at Old Trafford, despite the pressure on his shoulders.

Recently, the England international has seen his form dip; he was poor in United's draw with Tottenham, and scored an own goal in the FA Cup defeat by Chelsea on Sunday.

United fans are sticking by him for the most part, but some have drawn attention to Merson's comments about the defender from the start of the season.

One supporter even shared a video of Merson discussing Maguire with the caption: "Make fun of him all you want, this guy was absolutely spot on."

Back in August 2019, Merson said on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday: "Maguire for £80million is ridiculous at the highest level.

"You have to remember he ripped it up for England in a three. And when you play in a three at the back, you do that for one reason only – the defenders are not good enough and you do not trust them. He done well at England.

"But you have to remember when he plays for Leicester, they play, they drop back and defend on the edge of their box, there is no space behind. The ball comes in the middle, he heads it out, he comes out running with the ball.

"He kicks off now with Man Utd and you are on the halfway line and all of a sudden you are playing against Arsenal and you are on the halfway line and balls are going over the top for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and for Man City for Sergio Aguero and it is pace, pace, pace."
