Paulo Di Canio tears into Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku and brands £97m ace ‘dull’

Paulo Di Canio has torn into Romelu Lukaku amid his goal drought for Chelsea, labelling him "dull".

The Belgium international signed from Inter Milan for a club-record £97.5million to mark his second spell at Stamford Bridge after first arriving 10 years ago as a teenager.

Lukaku started off in fine form, netting three in two Premier League matches including a debut strike against Arsenal.

But it has been tough for the former Manchester United star in recent weeks and he has now gone six matches without a goal.

The latest showing was a below-par performance against Brentford where he was taken off by Thomas Tuchel, who admitted he looked tired.

However, former West Ham star Di Canio has gone further – insisting the Belgian is a dull player who only suits certain systems.

On the Sky Calcio Club show, he said: "I heard (Giuseppe) Bergomi comparing (Napoli striker Victor) Osimhen and Lukaku.

"But Osimhen has a different spirit, he's not dull like him.

"When the difficulty increased he scored no goals in five games with Chelsea.

"And it's not Chelsea's fault, they are first (in the Premier League table) even without his goals."

Lukaku was on fire for Inter Milan last season where he led them to a first Serie A title in 10 years after netting 24 times in the league.

Under Antonio Conte, the striker seemed to find a coach to get the best out of him and there have been suggestions that Thomas Tuchel is still trying to work out how to use him.

Di Canio added: "Lukaku does not score. Lukaku is a functional player, as Llorente was in (Antonio) Conte's Juve.

"Even if Lukaku is stronger than Llorente. Lukaku is functional to a certain type of game."
