Philippe Coutinho’s agent working on Arsenal transfer as Barcelona push for sale

Philippe Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian is working on a move to Arsenal with Barcelona keen to move him on this summer. But due to the finances Arsenal would only be able to do a loan deal.

Coutinho’s future is up in the air with Barcelona keen to sell, Bayern Munich not interested in a permanent deal and a host of Premier League clubs linked with a move.

Arsenal are among them and, according the Mirror, Coutinho’s agent Joorabchian is working on a move.

But due to the figures involved Arsenal would only be in the market for a loan deal, and would need Barcelona to subsidise his wages. It could still happen that way though with Barca desperate to get him out again.

Mikel Arteta is coming under pressure to turn things around at Arsenal but until they know if they’re going to be in Europe next year their budget is restricted.

Arteta has handed new deals to David Luis, Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares but will need reinforcements when the transfer window opens to get the club back in the right direction.

The two defeats since the restart have left the Gunners in the bottom half of the table and 11 points behind Chelsea in fourth place.

Coutinho would add some much-needed sparkle to the team, but Arteta is really lacking in leaders and solid defenders.

Gary Neville has warned they need a real revamp.

“You just can’t trust Arsenal, you haven’t been able to for years,” he told the Gary Neville Podcast.

“We’ve all said it. Mikel Arteta – we should still say that the shape Arsenal are playing, the shape they have defensively I think is better than it was previously but the individuals within that will let you down.

“It doesn’t matter how well you coach the shape, if you get exposed one on one or defenders make mistakes – as we saw in that game against Manchester City and against Brighton – then you’re just going to get punished.

“They just need defenders with better concentration. Jamie (Carragher) mentioned about Dejan Lovren being emotional.

“Sir Alex Ferguson – there were elements of me that were emotional sometimes as a player and he would knock it right out of me. He said I hate emotional defenders. He wants his defenders to be ice cold.”

However signing Coutinho would likely still appeal to Arsenal and Arteta with Joorabchian becoming a more influential figure around the club due to his connection with technical director Edu.

Another of Joorabchian’s clients Willian has also been linked with Arsenal with his Chelsea contract up in the summer, while David Luis has signed a new deal at the club to stay for next season.
