Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s new Arsenal contract detailed by Nigel Winterburn

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is close to signing a new three-year deal at the Emirates.

Aubameyang’s future has been up in the air all summer as he has just a year remaining on his current contract.

Barcelona and Inter Milan are believed to have been interested in a transfer though Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is confident that Aubameyang will stay.

The striker scored as Arsenal got their Premier League campaign off to a perfect start with a 3-0 victory at Fulham.

And Winterburn opened up on what he knows about the new contract that former Borussia Dortmund star Aubameyang is set to sign.

“My understanding is the contract is done, it’s not signed, and that Aubameyang will be at Arsenal for the foreseeable future,” Winterburn told Stadium Astro.

“My understanding is that it’s a three-year plus contract. It seems to be taking a long, long time.

“It’s made me very nervous, he’s the one player that Arsenal cannot afford to lose, particularly with what Mikel Arteta is trying to achieve at the football club.

“You’ve got positive vibes coming out and bring in some good players and then you [potentially] lose your top striker, your talisman, your leader of the club at this moment in time.

“Until it’s signed I won’t believe it but my understanding is the agreement is there, it’s in place, he will be at Arsenal next season.”

Aubameyang has remained tight-lipped on his situation, though Arteta gave a few more details away before the weekend’s win.

He said: “I can say that I am even more confident than I was at the end of last season when you asked me the same question 10 times!

“I am very optimistic. I think [those fans who are worried] can be pretty relaxed!”
