Piers Morgan has joked that his beloved Arsenal to try and tempt Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, 46, out of retirement after his impressive performance for England at Soccer Aid.

The broadcaster and journalist has been a vocal critic of the Gunners following their recent fall from grace, and his latest tweet shows what he thinks of their current midfield options.

With Mikel Arteta struggling to find his best XI after three defeats from three Premier League outings, the arrivals of Martin Odegaard and Albert Sambi Lokonga on permanent deals are yet to impress.

With questions over both Thomas Partey, Mohamed Elneny and most notably Granit Xhaka, Morgan was on the lookout for new talent in the most unlikely of places.

That place happened to be Soccer Aid's 2021 event at the Etihad on Saturday, in which Wayne Rooney, Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, David James, Joe Cole and Scholes were playing among others.

Despite the World XI running out 3-0 winners thanks to Love Island's Kem Cetinay and Lee Mack, former GMB host Morgan joked that Arsenal should sign one of the losing side's stars.

He wrote: "I’d take Paul Scholes in Arsenal's current midfield. #SoccerAid."

In response, one rival fan said: "Like he would downgrade from retirement to Arsenal."

With another adding: "Judy Murray would be an improvement…!!"

A third continued: "You’d take Charlie Adam at this point."

With a fourth joking: "Not sure he fancies Championship football.."

Back in 2015, two years after his second retirement at United, Scholes was asked by Neville whether he would consider another comeback to play for Salford City in the FA Cup.

The former right-back said: "It's me. What do you think about playing for Salford against Ashton United in the FA Cup? One word answer."

Scholes replied: "Shambles."

When Neville added: "Go on. "One game! I'll play if you play."

Scholes concluded: "I'm fat as f***."What would it achieve?"
