Pochettino ‘making PSG look like Newcastle’ as Messi subbed off at half-time

Mauricio Pochettino has been slammed for 'making PSG look like Newcastle' after Lionel Messi was subbed at half-time against Lille.

Messi, 34, has struggled to hit the ground running since his dramatic summer move from Barcelona, but few expected the Argentine to be withdrawn midway through on Friday night.

But with PSG 1-0 down following Jonathan David's 31st minute opener, Pochettino made the bold decision to replace the six-time Ballon d'Or winner with Mauro Icardi during the half-time interval.

Although the decision paid off as the home side went on to turn the game around with goals from Marquinhos and Angel di Maria, supporters were still unhappy on social media.

Some claimed Pochettino was out of his depth, while others accused the former Tottenham boss of making PSG look like Newcastle.

One person wrote: "Messi hasn’t been great, but for Pochettino to sub him off is just blasphemous. It just gets worse every game with Pochettino. Clueless and just absolutely lost out there, he’s making this PSG side look like Newcastle at times. He has to go."

Someone else said: "Poch might go down as the worst PSG manager in the Qatari era ngl, he has the best team they had in many years and they play the worst football."

A third person commented: "Sack Pochettino. PSG have a terrible style of play under him."

While another user complained: "This is the second time that Pochettino has substituted #Messi when PSG were struggling. Question is, if it was really his fault, then how come they still struggle even when he ain't playing? Frankly, Poch is out of his depth. Doesn't know how to use these stars."

Ultimately, Pochettino's decision paid off as PSG recovered to win 2-1 and extend their lead at the top of Ligue 1.

The French giants are now ten points clear of second-placed Lens, with Nice a point further back in third.

Messi, meanwhile, is still yet to score in the league since his switch from Barcelona.
