The dates for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been released and it means a major shake up for Premier League football.

The traditional quadrennial tournament will take place during winter for the first time in its history due to host nation Qatar's hot summer climate.

The World Cup has been pushed back until November when temperatures are deemed more fitting for a sporting competition – though highs of 28 degrees are still expected.

As a result, the Premier League will have a mid-season break for more than six weeks to accommodate the new dates.

This will take place after the final fixture of the weekend on November 13, 2022.

The Premier League will then undergo a 44-day hiatus with top-flight football not resuming until Boxing Day.

The new season will start a week earlier than usual on August 6 and finish a week later on May 28.

Consequently, both the Champions League and FA Cup finals will be held in June.

The World Cup has a start date of November 21, with Qatar opening the tournament as host nation on their debut appearance.

The 28-day tournament will come to its climax on December 18, with the final taking place at the aptly named Lusail Iconic Stadium, which has a capacity of 80,000.

That means Premier League football will resume just eight days after the trophy is lifted.

The Premier League statement reads: "The Premier League 2022/23 season dates have been confirmed.

"The season has been adjusted to accommodate the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 which will take place in the middle of the domestic calendar.
