Premier League manager records vs their former clubs as Gerrard faces Liverpool

Managers returning to face their former clubs in the Premier League average a measly 0.94 points per game, according to new research from bettingexpert.

The research comes as Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard prepares to take his Aston Villa team to Anfield this weekend.

But Premier League managers have typically struggled against their ex-teams in the past decade.

Gerrard will hope to do better than former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez on his return to Anfield, with the Spaniard having failed to win in seven matches against the Reds while in charge of Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton.

Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, won only twice against Chelsea in nine matches during spells at Manchester United and Tottenham.

Recently dismissed Newcastle manager Steve Bruce had an equally difficult time against his former team Manchester United, losing four times and winning only once.

By far the most successful manager when facing a former team was Mauricio Pochettino, who won seven of 11 matches against Southampton while Tottenham boss.

Perhaps surprisingly, Mark Hughes during his time at Stoke did relatively well in his matches against Manchester United, losing only three of nine games, drawing four and winning two.

A bettingexpert spokesperson said: “The stats suggest that Steven Gerrard could well find it tough when he returns to Anfield as Aston Villa manager this weekend.

“With an average points per match of 0.94 and goal difference of -3, Premier League managers have typically struggled in recent years when meeting old teams.

“Gerrard will hope his record against his ex-club is closer to that of Mauricio Pochettino’s rather than Rafa Benitez’s.”
