Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was a transfer target for Paris Saint-Germain this summer before they were presented with the shock opportunity to capture Lionel Messi from Barcelona, it has been claimed. The Reds midfielder ended the uncertainty over his Anfield future by penning a new deal last month.
PSG have held a long-standing interest in Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and did toy with the idea of submitting a bid for the Frenchman this summer.
It’s now expected that the French giants will swoop for Pogba next summer when he’ll be a free agent.

But they did explore other avenues of interest in their bid to bolster their midfield.
PSG’s surprise interest in Henderson was revealed by journalist Fabrizio Romano on The Here We Go Podcast.
“For Jordan Henderson, I want to say, behind the scenes PSG were thinking of Jordan Henderson as a potential new signing before the Leo Messi opportunity, because Leo Messi was an opportunity, it was not something planned,” he said.

“Before signing Messi, they were looking for a midfielder. Pogba was more than complicated because Man United wanted to keep him, and Paris Saint-Germain were looking for Jordan Henderson when he had no agreement with Liverpool over a new contract.”
Despite playing a pivotal role for the Reds both on and off the pitch, it was far from a foregone conclusion that Henderson would remain at Anfield due to a stalemate over a new deal.
But a resolution was found, with Henderson becoming the latest in a host of big names who have inked fresh terms with Liverpool this summer.
And that was a big relief to his boss, Jurgen Klopp, who was adamant that the issue “would get sorted” just days after the story broke, such is Henderson’s importance to the Reds.

After signing his new deal, Henderson shared his excitement at being able to continue his “incredible” journey at Anfield.
“I’m obviously very honoured and proud to continue the journey I’ve already been on here,” he told Liverpool’s media channels.
“It’s amazing to finally get it done and just concentrate on looking forward and what the future may hold.
“I’m in a different place of course, as a player and as a person, from when I first walked in. I’ve learned and grown a lot over my time here, and I’ve got to thank a lot of people for that.
“I’ve loved every minute of it, even when I look back at the tough times, I was still enjoying being a part of this football club. The longer I can do that, the better for me really. I want to be here as long as possible, I’ve always said that.
“To continue this journey is incredible for me and my family, and I hope the fans and the club feel the same way.”
