PSG 'have told Messi they want to offer him a contract extension'

PSG ‘have told Lionel Messi they want to offer him a one-year contract extension until 2024’… but the Argentine superstar ‘will not decide on his future until after Qatar World Cup’

  • Lionel Messi signed a deal with PSG until 2023 after his Barcelona exit last year
  • His debut season in Ligue 1 was his worst for goal contributions for 15 years
  • But PSG chiefs reportedly want to keep him at the club beyond next summer
  • Messi’s contract in the French capital is reported to be worth £960,000-a-week

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly want to extend the contract of superstar forward Lionel Messi by a further year.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner signed a deal in the French capital until 2023 after departing Barcelona last summer.

While his debut season at PSG was his worst for goal contributions for 15 years, the economic value that Messi brought to the club in terms of shirt sales and sponsorship deals was gigantic.

PSG reportedly want to extend the contract of superstar forward Lionel Messi by a further year

According to Marca, the Ligue 1 champions have told the 35-year-old that they want him to stay beyond next summer but a concrete offer is yet to be made.

On Messi’s part, it is suggested that he will not make a decision on his future until after the Qatar World Cup in the winter.

There have been reports that the forward’s current contract already includes the option of a one-year extension, but Marca claim that this is not the case.

After struggling with fitness issues when he first signed for PSG last summer, Messi’s first goal for the club did not come until November and he only found the net six times in Ligue 1 throughout the campaign.

He finished second behind Kylian Mbappe in the assists chart though with 14, while he also scored five times in the Champions League.

Messi’s contract in Paris is reported to be worth £960,000-per-week, making him the second-highest player in the world – again only trumped by PSG team-mate Mbappe.
