Manchester United have a long-standing interest in French defender Nordi Mukiele and could make an offer this summer, according to reports. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick knows the player well from his time in charge at RB Leipzig which could prove vital in beating off competition for his signature.
United are set for a major overhaul of their squad this summer. Several players will be leaving the club at the end of their contracts.
Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba are all set to be on their way. Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will want to put his stamp on the squad to start a huge rebuilding squad at Old Trafford.
And French outlet Foot Mercato claims Mukiele is one player the Red Devils could target. The report says the Red Devils have tracked the player for several years and that interest could lead to an offer this summer.
Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the 24-year-old and both of those clubs will be able to offer something United can’t next season – Champions League football. But the presence of Rangnick could help United’s cause.
The German managed Mukiele during the player’s first season in Leipzig. He made 31 appearances in all competitions that campaign before Rangnick left the club.
Rangnick will leave his role as interim boss at United but will remain as a consultant to Ten Hag, combining the job with being manager of the Austria national team. Mukiele has now made almost 150 appearances for Leipzig in all competitions.

The versatile star, whose only cap for France so far came last year, can play at right-back, wing-back and centre-back. He showcased his attacking prowess in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Augsburg by providing two assists and also winning a penalty.
United are set to be in the market for a central defender, while there has been criticism of £50million Aaron Wan-Bissaka this season. Meanwhile, it is claimed PSG are keen on signing Mukiele to provide cover for both Achraf Hakimi at right-back and Marquinhos in the middle of defence.
Mukiele’s contract at Leipzig expires at the end of next season so Leipzig could look to cash in to prevent him from leaving for free in just over 12 months’ time.
