Raphael Varane ‘could leave Man Utd for £17m’ in January as Bayern hold talks

Raphael Varane could reportedly leave Manchester United in the January transfer window, with Bayern Munich one of the clubs interested in the French defender. The 30-year-old has seemingly fallen out of favour with Erik ten Hag as Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans have recently been preferred as the starting centre-backs, prompting rumours that Varane may depart Old Trafford.
Sky Sports Germany have claimed that Bayern have considered a move for Varane and internal discussions have taken place over a potential January swoop. They have been informed that a mid-season exit is a possibility, despite United’s injury crisis at the back.
Varane has been valued at £17million though a loan is not thought to be an option currently. His salary demands are deemed unrealistic by the Bundesliga giants. He would expect a £17m-a-year wage that the German side are currently unwilling to pay, though they are keeping a close eye on his situation and how it develops.
Varane will undoubtedly be disappointed that he is below Maguire and Evans in Ten Hag’s thinking. Even after the veteran suffered an injury it was Victor Lindelof who was preferred alongside Maguire in the 1-0 win over Luton, with Varane reduced to an 11-minute cameo off the bench.

JUST IN Ex-Man Utd scout Marcel Bout’s admission about the Glazer family speaks volumes[INTERVIEW]
“Absolutely not,” Ten Hag said earlier this month when asked if there was an issue between himself and Varane, with many perplexed at his omission. “As I said, it is about tactical reasons why I chose these partnerships. I think Harry and Jonny did well (against Fulham).
“What I said last year, Harry didn’t play a lot, so I was very happy with Rapha’s performances. I have always been happy with his performance. But in this moment, Harry is playing very well and there is internal competition.

“There are moments in certain games where they (Maguire and Varane) can play together and they have already proven they can do it. But the build-up is not that fluid when one of them is playing from the left centre-back position.”
Varane has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia to join the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema in the Middle East. But Bayern, should a move materialise, would allow the defender to remain at the top level and compete in the Champions League.
Both United and Bayern are in the same group in the European competition but the German side have already qualified for the knockout stages after four wins from four games. The Red Devils on the other hand sit bottom with one win, but have a chance at finishing second as they are only one point behind both Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
