Real Madrid have given Raphael Varane's agent the green light to begin negotiations with Manchester United over a potential summer transfer, according to reports in Spain.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the hunt for a new centre-back partner for captain Harry Maguire, with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly proving too inconsistent last term.
The Red Devils have been linked with a host of defenders so far this summer, including Varane's former team-mate Sergio Ramos, Villarreal's Pau Torres and Atalanta's Cristian Romero.
However, Varane is also believed to be on their radar after Madrid president Florentino Perez opened the door for him to leave the Bernabeu this summer.
Perez is keen to move the France international on after seeing him enter the final year of his Los Blancos contract, and with Real currently in €901m worth of debt.
Varane is said to have been left unhappy with the Spanish club's latest contract offer, which he feels does not match up to his own talent and what other team-mates earn.

As a result, a summer switch to United has been mooted – and Spanish journalist Jose Felix Diaz claims Madrid have 'authorised' his ages to open talks with United and close an agreement.
Once those negotiations are complete, it will then be passed on to Real to discuss terms with the Red Devils and conclude the transfer.
Varane would arrive at Old Trafford with vast experience at top level, having racked up over 350 appearances for Madrid.
The 28-year-old has won four Champions Leagues, three Spanish titles and one Copa del Rey, as well as multiple Club World Cups and Super Cups.

Yet, former France defender Frank Leboeuf doesn't understand why he would move to United, telling ESPN: "We saw him win lots of silverware and he can serve Manchester United. It’s a good signing for Manchester United.
"Is it for Varane a good signing if he wants to win something? I’m not sure."
