Real Madrid have reportedly agreed to sell Raphael Varane to Manchester United, but may be about to make the same mistake Liverpool made 12 months ago. Varane’s contract situation at Real was well documented heading into last season with the Spanish outfit originally confident of agreeing new terms.

But as the season drew to a close, it soon become clear that Varane wasn’t going to sign an extension.

With his contract expiring in 2022, clubs all over Europe took attention to Varane’s situation.

United showed the most interest in stealing Varane away from Real though and appear to have made a breakthrough in discussions.

Reports now suggest a fee has been agreed between the two clubs and Varane is expected to be confirmed as a United player in the near future.

The signing of Varane will prove to be a real coup for United with the France international still at his peak.

But it leaves Real in a sticky situation having already let Sergio Ramos leave as a free agent this summer.

David Alaba has arrived as Ramos’ replacement with Carlo Ancelotti set to go with a new-look defensive unit next season.

However, there won’t be extra cover coming in to take Varane’s place in Real’s defence.

That’s according to SB Nation, who claim the La Liga club have no plans to sign a replacement for Varane.

It is reported that Ancelotti will go forward with Alaba, Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez as the three senior centre-backs next season.

And the Real boss will look to promote from within should they need options in defence.

Liverpool opted for a similar approach last summer after allowing Dejan Lovren to leave.

Jurgen Klopp was content with utilising Fabinho as a fourth-choice option, but a major injury crisis soon wreaked havoc on Liverpool’s season with a number of players having to fill in at the back.

Not signing a more experienced option to fill in with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all injured proved costly for Liverpool in their bid to defend their Premier League crown.

They’ve quickly moved to make amends this summer by signing Ibrahima Konate, but it appears as though Real are prepared to take the risk.
