Sourpuss Real Madrid president Florentino Perez says he reckons Erling Haaland would've rotted on the bench had he picked Los Blancos over Manchester City.
Despite appearing pretty desperate to land one of either Haaland or PSG forward Kylian Mbappe this summer, Perez insists Madrid are happy to have missed out on both of them because they have Ballon d'Or front-runner Karim Benzema up top instead.
"Mbappe deal didn’t create any problem with Haaland deal, absolutely. We have Benzema, so it was impossible to have him with Karim," Perez told Spanish outlet El Chiringuito. "We can’t sign Haaland to stay on the bench. Haaland is an amazing, fantastic player."
After City wrapped up their £51 million deal for Haaland early doors, Madrid's attention turned to Mbappe and a deal for the 23-year-old looked done and dusted until PSG coaxed him back into their clutches by effectively handing him the deed to the Parc des Princes.
Like a divorced dad desperate for his estranged son's love and attention, the French giants offered to spoil Mbappe rotted if he stayed – and so he did.
For once, Madrid were the ones left gawking at another club's bottomless bank account and Perez wasn't going to take it lying down – despite the palpable irony of it all.
If Haaland joined Real Madrid would he start over Benzema? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
He accused PSG and City of "harming football" and La Liga – likely on Perez' behalf – lodged an official complaint about PSG to UEFA for "continuously breaching financial fair play regulations".
Not so fun when the shoe's on the other foot is it, Florentino?
All criticism aside though, Perez might actually be right about Haaland getting benched – such has been the utterly spellbinding form of Benzema over the past year-and-a-half, but no mistake about it … this is nothing but the sourest of sour grapes.
