Chelsea star Reece James has been backed by his team-mates after his passionate plea to save Wigan Athletic.

The Latics are facing an uncertain future after administrators took over the club.

They have until August 31 to sell the club or Wigan face not being able to start the 2020/21 season in League One.

"I'm still optimistic that one of these deals will come to fruition," administrator Gerald Krasner said.

"I've got what I call the front-runners. I've got two different groups of Americans and I've got two UK bidders.

"One of the UK people has got the wherewithal to do it, but has got certain conditions, so we're still talking to these people."

However, fans are looking to raise £500,000 by Monday in a bid to save the club.

They have been calling on former players to help spread the word and one has done so and more.

Chelsea ace James spent the 2018/19 season on loan at the DW Stadium where he played every game in the Championship – except one.

He made a huge impact during his time with the fans, even captaining the club as a teenager on occasion.

His performances in the North-West helped convince Frank Lampard that he deserved a spot in Chelsea's first team last season.

But he has not forgotten where he made a name for himself and has made a passionate plea to players to help save Wigan Athletic.

As well as donating £3,000 himself, his post was shared by fellow Chelsea stars Christian Pulisic, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi – who have a combined Instagram following of over 5.7m people.

In a further bid, James has also posted the link to the crowdfunder site that is looking to boost Wigan's funds in his Twitter and Instagram bio.

He tweeted: "Come on let’s help @laticsofficial out!
