Remembering Kevin Keegan’s iconic rant amid Newcastle’s title fight with Man Utd

Ahead of the Carabao Cup final between Newcastle and Manchester United, it's only right that we look back at one of the most iconic Premier League interviews.

As Kevin Keegan's Newcastle chased down top-of-the-table United, Keegan couldn't help but launch into a bizarre rant during an interview with Sky Sports in April 1996.

Keegan's Newcastle had just beaten Leeds United 1-0 – narrowing the gap at the top to just three points, and The Magpies had a game in hand.

Sir Alex Ferguson had already taken a cheap shot at Keegan before the match stating teams don't try as hard against Newcastle, and Keegan took the bait.

"I've kept really quiet but I'll tell you something, he went down in my estimations when he said that. We have not resorted to that.

"You can tell him now, we're still fighting for this title and he's got to go to Middlesbrough and get something – and I'll tell you, honestly, I will love it if we beat them. Love it."

The two historic sides are set to battle it out on the legendary Wembley turf on Sunday as one of them looks to bring the Carabao Cup up north with them.

Newcastle fans made headlines in the build-up to the final as they made themselves at home in the capital, with thousands flooding Trafalgar Square and one giddy Toon fan having a splash in the water fountain.
