Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand admits calls for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho to land this year’s Ballon d’Or ‘baffles’ him. Jorginho is among the favourites to win the award after a stellar year for Chelsea and Italy.

The midfielder starred for the west Londoners as they lifted the Champions League trophy in May and then put in a string of magnificent performances as his country won Euro 2020 six weeks later.

But Ferdinand believes there are other Chelsea players who deserve to win the award more than the 29-year-old.

“The Jorginho one baffles me,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He’s not the best player at Chelsea and he’s not the first name on the teamsheet with Italy either.

“Listen, he’s a very good player and I’m not trying to be disrespectful but I don’t see how he gets on the list with those players at the level those guys have been playing at.

“If you look at Chelsea in the run-in to winning the Champions League I think Kante was man-of-the match in five of the last six games so it baffles me.

“He’s won two of the big trophies – I get that. I understand it but, when you’re putting him up against the four other players there, it doesn’t really make sense to me.”

Robert Lewandowski is the favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or after a sensational year for Bayern Munich.

Since the turn of the year, the forward has scored 50 goals and assisted another six in 38 games for the German giants.

His form last season helped Bayern win their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title.

He has also found the back of the net nine times in 11 games for Poland and notched three times at Euro 2020, despite his country being knocked out in the group stages.

And Ferdinand believes the 33-year-old should win the award for the first time in his career.

“I think this year, Lewandowski, yeah,” Ferdinand continued.

“Fifty-six goal involvements in 38 games is ridiculous. That is Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi numbers.”

Lionel Messi had been favourite to lift the individual trophy for an incredible seventh time but has fallen behind Lewandowski in the race for glory after a poor start to life at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Argentina forward has scored just three goals since moving to France from Barcelona and is yet to register a strike in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah and Karim Benzema have also been backed to challenge for the award in recent weeks.

This year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony takes place in Paris on November 29.
