Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has pinpointed why Romelu Lukaku wasn’t successful at Old Trafford. Lukaku spent two seasons at United but was shipped off to Inter Milan after falling out of favour.
There were high hopes for Lukaku when he arrived at United from Everton in the summer of 2017 in a deal worth £75million.
The powerhouse forward had struck 87 goals in 166 games for Everton and was regarded as one of the most deadly finishers in the Premier League.
And Lukaku enjoyed a strong start to his United career as he found the back of the net a remarkable 11 times in his first 10 appearances.
In his first season at Old Trafford, Lukaku scored 27 goals in 51 games as the Red Devils finished second in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final under Jose Mourinho.
But the Belgium international had a miserable second season at the club and struggled for form after the arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He was eventually sold to Inter, where he rediscovered his best form before sealing a move back to Chelsea this summer for a second stint in west London.
Lukaku has been flying for Chelsea since his return to the club and has proved a real handful for opposition defences.
And Ferdinand believes the striker’s unsuccessful spell at Old Trafford can be put down to the club’s instability at the time.
“Sometimes it’s about the club fitting the player and the player fitting that club at the right time,” Ferdinand told BT Sport ahead of United’s clash with Aston Villa.

“I think the timing wasn’t right for him at Man United. The stability they have now wasn’t there when he was there.
“If it was now it would be very different – I think he’d be doing what he’s doing here [at Chelsea].
“He went away under a cloud at Man United and has come back an animal and someone you can count on to win you trophies.”
Lukaku helped Chelsea storm to the top of the table after their first five games as they racked-up four wins and a draw.
And former England midfielder Joe Cole has also praiseed the impact the striker has made at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s clear when Chelsea signed him – it’s the easiest bit of business any recruitment team could do,” said Cole.
“Timo Werner – excellent player – but he’s missed chances. This guy [Lukaku] is clinical. He’s the real deal and he’s completed Chelsea.”
