A fired up Rio Ferdinand shouted ‘what am I hearing?’ when he was told Frank Lampard was less impactful than Steven Gerrard.

The Manchester United legend had the good fortune of sharing the pitch with both players for England, and in Lampard’s case, as a youngster at West Ham United. The so-called ‘Gerrard vs Lampard’ debate feels like it is as old as time as itself.

However, football fans have argued about the Chelsea and Liverpool legends, not just throughout their playing career, but during the pair’s early ventures into management also. And Ferdinand was left with both hands on his head when his colleague Joel Beya told him Gerrard was "more impactful" than Lampard.

Initially, Ferdinand, Beya, and fellow presenter Stephen Howson were debating about the possible inclusion of Kevin De Bruyne alongside Gerrard, Lampard, and fellow United legend Paul Scholes. However, Ferdinand does not believe the Manchester City midfielder’s impact matches that of Lampard just yet.

“Not Lampard,” Ferdinand said to Vibe with Five. “Lampard scored more goals all day long. 20 goals a season for four or five straight seasons. When asked if Lampard was ‘bottom of the list’ amongst Gerrard, De Bruyne, and Scholes, Ferdinand leapt to his former teammate’s defence.

“No, no, no, no, I wouldn’t say that with the conviction you just said that. You can’t sit there and go ‘easy Frank Lampard is right at the bottom of that list’.” After Beya confidently said, “Lampard was not as impactful as Steven Gerrard,” Ferdinand furiously responded “Shut-up, please, no, what am I hearing!”

“You just said ‘he’s not as impactful’. Lampard scored 20 goals a season for five or six seasons on the bounce. No other midfielder in Premier League history has done that.” It is not the first time Ferdinand – who came through the West Ham academy as a youngster with Lampard – has gone against the grain to put his friend at the top of the midfield table.

"If I'm a manager I take Frank because he's going to get me 20 (goals) a year,” Ferdinand said in 2021. “As a manager I want them to define matches, he's going to get me 20 and probably double-figures in assists.”

“He didn't score as much as Frank, Frank's the most potent out of all of them in terms of goals – none of them can get near Frank. Goals and assists, Frank dwarfs everybody and he was cold as ice in the box.”
