Roma chaos as Lukaku is sent off for ‘leg breaker’ tackle and Mourinho sees red

Romelu Lukaku was at the heart of some chaotic scenes after being sent off for an atrocious tackle.

And the Roma striker's studs-up challenge on Fiorentina's Christian Kouame was criticised as a potential leg-breaker. The two teams were drawing 1-1 in the closing minutes of their Serie A clash at the Stadio Olimpico when Lukaku's sliding challenge missed the mark by more than a degree.

The Belgian clearly made contact with Kouame's shin as replays showed his boot ripping the Fiorentina man's sock apart. Not that the clear red-worthy attempt prevented Giallorossi boss Jose Mourinho from protesting wildly as the scenes devolved in Italy's capital.

La Viola boss Vincenzo Italiano rightly ran down the touchline in response to Lukaku's lunge, which could see him miss upcoming games against Bologna, Napoli and Juventus. The challenge was that much sillier given Nicola Zalewski had already been sent off for Roma, who held on to draw 1-1 despite the deficit.

"What a stupid, dangerous tackle by Lukaku," railed one spectator online. "He could have broken the Fiorentina player's tibia into two pieces."

"You can't argue with that," echoed another. "Disgusting from Lukaku." Others saw the more light-hearted side of the incident and a third viewer replied: "Alexa, show me a forward's tackle."

Fiorentina also had a player sent off at the Olimpico, though Nikola Milenkovic's dismissal didn't have as much impact considering he was an unused substitute. A draw was enough to keep Mourinho's men fourth in Serie A for the time being, while the Italiano's side remain in seventh and missed their chance to leapfrog Roma.

'The Special One' now faces a conundrum in how to restructure his side for the gruelling tests to come without Lukaku available. The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Inter frontman sits joint-third in the Serie A scoring charts with seven goals this season, but it seems his chances of adding to that haul in 2023 are over.
