Manchester United were rocked in the summer when Ronaldo made it clear he wanted to leave.

The Portugal international was frustrated at the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, especially when he’d netted 24 goals across all competitions.

However, despite links to the likes of Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund, Ronaldo ended up staying put.

Amid the uncertainty over his future, The Athletic revealed United had filmed a video with Adidas to promote their new home shirt.

It was claimed footage had been shot of Ronaldo and fellow iconic No 7’s of previous years, such as Beckham and Cantona.

With the Portugal international wanting to leave United at the time their new jersey was launched, however, they ultimately opted against releasing it to the public.

And, months on, it’s still to see the light of day.

With Ronaldo enduring a difficult start to the season, however, that’s no surprise. The 37-year-old looks a shadow of his usual self at present, with the forward yet to get off the mark.

He’s made just two starts this season, against Brentford and Real Sociedad.

And the Red Devils have lost both of those matches, shipping five goals and failing to find the net in either.

With that being the case, it’s possible Ronaldo will be forced to spend more time on the bench than he’s previously been used to.

Man Utd fixtures: When Erik ten Hag’s team face every Premier League team

Marcus Rashford has found a new lease of life playing down the middle, having previously toiled under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last season.

When Anthony Martial is fit, it’s also possible the France international will be above Ronaldo in Ten Hag’s pecking order as well.

Ronaldo appears to be a player on the wane though, that said, remains a formidable goalscorer and vital asset.

And whether he can bounce back from the shaky start to the season remains to be seen.

Ronaldo was criticised by Liverpool legend Steve Nicol after the Sociedad game, with the veteran accused of looking his age.

Opinion: The Glazers have five reasons to sell Man Utd

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “I’ll be honest, when you mention the game, the only thing I have in my head is Ronaldo clean through [on goal] and getting caught by two players.

“That’s kind of what springs to my mind. And he did have another look.

“He had a couple of other chances, not as good as that one, but there was just something missing.

“That’s what I think about when I think of this game.

“There wasn’t much in it between the two sides, not that many chances in the game.

“But that’s the only thing I can think of. The fact that Ronaldo was clean through and looked every one of those 36, 37 years.”

Antony, however, still thinks Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world.

“Words can’t describe Cristiano, the best in the world,” he told club media.

“In just a few days, I’ve learnt a lot from him. He has an extraordinary mind and, whenever I talk to him, I take a lot from it.

“I’m sure that we have a strong attack and it’s very promising for the future.”
