Wayne Rooney has controversially named the front three he wants to see England start and it doesn’t include Chelsea star Raheem Sterling.

Gareth Southgate named his 26-man England squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, leaving people now trying to predict the starting line-up.

Manchester United legend Rooney wasted no time and shared his views on the team by revealing the XI that he wants to see, including the front three he believes should start.

The biggest surprise in his selection was perhaps the fact that Sterling was not included – despite being a star figure for the Three Lions at Euro 2020.

Sterling has 19 goals in 79 caps for England and has been part of the squad for the last four major tournaments, despite only being 27-years-old.

‘Foden, Saka and obviously Harry Kane. Saka has been fantastic again this season for Arsenal,’ Rooney told TalkSport.

The Manchester United legend admitted he would go for a front three of Bukayo Saka (left), Harry Kane and Phil Foden (right)

‘I think Phil Foden is the best player we’ve got technically. His form for England hasn’t been as good as it has been for Manchester City, but you just hope he brings his form into the World Cup.

‘You’ve got the likes of [Marcus] Rashford and Sterling to come on and have an impact.’

Sterling’s form since his big-money move to Stamford Bridge has been questionable with just five goals in 17 appearances, with the last of those coming back in September.

After revealing his front three on the show, Rooney named the England starting line-up that he would opt for on the show and it included a back four rather than a back three, which England have used more during both the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

Jordan Pickford was his choice in goal while in defence he named a back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

It was a midfield two made up of West Ham star Declan Rice and Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Borussia Dortmund youngster Jude Bellingham in the number 10 role with Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden either side of him and of course captain Harry Kane leading the line.

The DC United manager has also backed Three Lions captain Kane to break his England goalscoring record during the major tournament.

The former striker notched 53 goals for his country surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton previous record of 49 back in 2015.

Tottenham forward Kane is currently sitting on 51 goals and second in the all-time goalscoring ranks heading to Qatar.

Rooney added: ‘Do you know what, I’m delighted for him and I think he’ll go on and smash the record.

‘I think he’ll end up on 70-odd goals, if I’m being honest. He deserves it for the work that he puts in.

‘It’s a huge honour to have the record but records are there to be broken and I can’t think of anyone better than Harry to go and take that record.

‘Hopefully he gets it during this World Cup because it’ll mean that he’s doing well for England.’
