Roy Keane slams Chelsea star's performance and 'attitude' against Man United

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has criticised Romelu Lukaku after being bemused by the striker’s performance as a substitute against his former club at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

The Belgian, wo signed for the Blues from Inter Milan last summer in a deal worth around £100m, replaced Kai Havertz with the scores level and twenty minutes of play remaining.

With the scores level after Cristian Ronaldo had cancelled out Marcos Alonso’s opener for the visitors, Lukaku barely influenced the game and couldn’t manage a single shot at goal.

Lukaku has now not scored in the Premier League since the end of December, and is on poor run of form which has seen him score only three times in 18 appearances so far in 2022, with those goals coming against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and Al Hilal and Palmeiras in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Ex-Sunderland manager Keane believes that Lukaku has been lacking desire in recent performances.

‘He’s come on against Man United, he was [a player] here, so you think, “I’ll show them my qualities”‘, Keane told Sky Sports. ‘He came on and again, just ambling along, not that determination to get himself a goal. As much as his fitness levels, I think his attitude doesn’t seem right.’

The 28-year-old enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career under Antonio Conte at Inter, scoring 47 times in 71 Serie A appearances, but has been unable to recapture that form since returning to Stamford Bridge after first leaving Chelsea for Everton in 2013.

With a total of 12 goals in 40 fixtures for far this campaign, Lukaku has been severely out of form since the beginning of winter, when he enraged Chelsea supporters by giving an interview to the media in which he expressed over leaving Inter last summer.

Manager Thomas Tuchel subsequently dropped the Belgian from his team for the Premier League fixture against Liverpool, who the Blues will face in the final of the FA Cup on 14 May.
