‘Scared stiff’ Alan Shearer fears Newcastle relegation despite billions in bank

Newcastle hero Alan Shearer fears relegation may be inevitable for his former side despite the £300m takeover from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

Still winless this season, the Toon could only claim a point in their relegation crunch-clash with Norwich City on Tuesday evening.

Though they took the lead, Eddie Howe's side were pegged back through Teemu Pukki's 79th-minute equaliser and the Magpies remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

Newcastle's record goalscoring was on commentary duty for last night's fixture and couldn't hide his anxiety surrounding their leaky backline.

On commentary for Amazon Prime, he said: "I'm still scared stiff whenever the ball goes into the final third for Newcastle as it's individual errors.

"I mean I just don't have a clue what they're going to do – I'm not sure they do at times.

"They did defend well and did react to the sending off and stick together as a group. But the individual errors are still there.

"Clark had one, (Fabian) Schar had one that could have cost them. The goalkeeper makes one I think he could have got two hands when the cross comes in.

"These are basic individual errors that at this level you're going to be punished."

By dropping another two points, the Magpies winless streak has extended to 15 matches in all competitions, 14 in the Premier League.

Newcastle remain six points off safety, though 17th-placed Watford and 16th-placed Southampton still both have a game in hand over their relegation rivals.

And despite having cash to splash in January, Shearer fears the writing may already be on the wall for his boyhood club.

He added: "I'm not convinced they will have enough. They now look to Saturday's game against Burnley, again, you're going to hear it's a must-win game over the next few days.

"Same as tonight. It's been 14 games (winless) and the longer it goes on the harder it becomes."
