Paul Scholes has aired his concerns that putting faith in Harry Maguire will come back to haunt Manchester United.
The Reds legend believes that the Untied captain should be dropped in favour of Victor Lindelof – but believes the fact that Ralf Rangnick continues to choose the England international in partnership with Raphael Varane is worrying. The German opted to select the out-of-form defender for United’s crucial clash against Atletico Madrid in the round of 16-second leg.
And in response, Scholes, while on pundit duty for BT Sport, said: “The manager has shown faith in him to keep playing him considering the form he’s been in. For me, the worry is what does this say about Lindelof? Lindelof, when he’s played, has done okay, nice and steady, not many mistakes. It seems everything Harry is doing has turned into an absolute disaster."
Maguire has been the target of United’s defensive woes this season, and it’s clearly started to impact on his form. But so far, Rangnick hasn’t done anything to suggest he has lost faith in the former Leicester City player.
Meanwhile, Owen Hargreaves said about Maguire’s poor form ahead of the game at Old Trafford: “It’s hard, we’ve all been there when you’re doubting yourself and you’re in poor form, but the only way to get out of it is to play your way out. It’s hard when everyone is criticising you, I think he’s trying to do much, too much on the ball. Keep it simple, and his form will come back."

Rio Ferdinand, meanwhile, said that the centre-back will know that his form is off and will be looking to rectify it.
"I think Rangnick is giving him the chance to perform. He is the captain of the football club. Captains of football clubs, in general, play. Harry himself will know he’s been struggling for form recently, and when it’s going against you, you get punished for making mistakes time and time again."
