Sergio Aguero’s Barcelona future has been up in the air since the announcement of Lionel Messi’s shock departure from the Camp Nou on Friday. Given that the opportunity to play with his compatriot was supposedly key in Aguero’s decision to move to Catalonia, the former Man City man is now believed to be considering his options.

After a prolific decade at the Etihad, Aguero made the decision to join Barca at the start of the summer after a season blighted by injuries.

As with any player linked to the Catalan side, the opportunity to play with arguably the best player of all time would have formed a major part of his rationale.

The pair have turned out together time and time again for Argentina, but never in club football.

Due to Messi’s impending move to PSG, this will continue to be the case as they both venture further into their thirties.

Barca announced on Friday that their dire financial situation left them unable to renew Messi’s contract, with even more work still to do before successfully complying with La Liga’s financial regulations.

Aguero had not even been formally registered with the club as they stalled for time to make room for Messi’s new contract.

However, it has all come crashing down at the Camp Nou, and now Aguero is reportedly going over the small print to see if he can backtrack on his decision to sign.

Furthermore, an unexpected development has come to the fore which could pave the way for the Argentine to burrow his way out.

Last season, Aguero was hampered significantly by injuries which restricted him to just 12 Premier League appearances.

As a result, Barca inserted an injury clause into his contract, according to Corriere dello Sport, which would seemingly allow them to cut the relationship short if Aguero’s injury woes continued.

Coincidentally, the striker suffered a calf injury directly in the wake of Messi’s farewell which is set to keep him out for over two months.

The ins and outs of Aguero’s injury clause are not common knowledge, but the club could well have shot themselves in the foot by giving the 33-year-old a potential way out.

With Barca in a tailspin, Aguero could hardly be blamed for considering his options as debts of over £1billion continue to loom large over the club’s future.

Ronald Koeman’s side must face next campaign without the goals of Messi, which have frankly carried them for a number of seasons.

If Aguero successfully found a way to depart in the coming weeks, Barca would be on the wrong end of a devastating one-two combination. Even worse, if he manages to legally backtrack on his contract, it could be their own mistake which left the door ajar.
